I was working at Warner Bros. on a Saturday when I received a hand drawn note with instructions on where to get the images of Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman from previous movies and how to arrange them on the page. I collected the images and assembled them. I assumed this was a direct to DVD movie since we were scratching out the artwork, but I wanted to do something a little special. So, I spent my time working on the shadows on her left shoulder and cheek then sent a print off the the address on the note. A few days later I heard the poster was good and Clint was very happy. I asked, “Was that sketch from Clint Eastwood!?” “Yeah,” my manager said. A few months went by and “Million Dollar Baby” won picture of the year. I’m still stunned that I was able to work on this directly with the man in charge and it was a one shot deal. Subsequently I’ve heard that’s how it is with him. No fuss, let’s just get it done.
